Yesterday I had the training class that I told you about a couple of weeks ago. I had been abstaining from alcohol for about 2 weeks, so that I could be a guinea pig in a Standardized Field Sobriety Training class. I was honored to have been asked not only to be used as a subject, but to come back and speak to the class the next day.
We started drinking at 11:00 AM. I don't think that I have ever had a drink that early in the day before. I was supposed to get to a .10 BAC, which is above the legal limit to drive in my state. Two cranberry and vodkas later, I was only at a .058, well below the legal limit. Let me tell you, even at that low level I would never have driven a car. I could feel the effects, and I knew I shouldn't be driving. They upped the concentration of my drinks after that and soon I was a .124. I was ready for the students.
They came in groups of two or three and performed three tests on us. The HGN test, where they look at your eyes, the 9 step walk and turn, and the one legged stand. Ahem. Regardless of the fact that I routinely practice these tests (except for HGN, you can't practice that one) I would have been arrested every time. I just couldn't do it. At some points I started thinking to myself how odd it is to be performing the very exams that I look at people doing every day. Every time I thought about that I would start to giggle. Just call me Drunky McDrunkerton.
At the end of the day, I gave a big hug to the Sgt. who asked me to help out and got in the car. Don was driving me home, obviously. I knew pretty quickly that I wouldn't be able to watch the kids. He put me to bed, and by 8 PM I already had a raging hangover.
This morning I was OK, but not really looking forward to facing all those students again. After all, there are parts of yesterday that I still don't remember. I lived up to my promise, however, and showed up to talk to them. I think a more experienced prosecutor would have put on a better presentation, but I loved doing it.
The rest of the day was crazy. I have jury trials next week. In the first one, opposing counsel with be a guy that I went to law school with. He is really close to Don, and my kids call him Uncle. It is going to be strange. Guess whose side Don is on. I'll give you a hint, he hopes the non-blogging attorney wins. Traitor. ;)

How fun! Seriously, sounds like an interesting work experiment. It makes me giggle to think about you all happy and drunken at work. "I love you, man!" Haha!
What a fascinating exercise. At least you were a giggly drunk and not a raging one.
I don't know that I've ever had a drink that early either--nor do I want to! I'm glad it went well for you except for the hangover part. Have fun during jury trials!
LOL, that's awesome.
And you've never had a drink at 11 a.m.? Sounds to me like a woman badly in need of a fabulous brunch and its attendant mimosa-based delights. ;) There are great Mother's Day brunch buffets that are fun for the kids too (something to do with the kid-high dessert table, I think).
