Remember last year? The worry started almost immediately. He just wasn't doing well. We were worried. We made the decision to let him repeat kindergarten at a new school and were so excited that he was accepted into the local Catholic School.
What a difference a year makes. Donnie got his report card yesterday. It was the equivalent of an all 'A' report card. (in that odd S, NI, U, NA way that they grade kindergarten here)
There was an extra note in his book bag. I'll bet you will never guess who is playing on of the three wise men in the Christmas play? (The former actress in me is screaming "yes! He isn't a sheep! It's like playing Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream! My son rules! -- the working mom in me is groaning "how am I going to make THAT costume?!) Really, this is so cool I can't stop telling people.
I had the first parent/teacher conference of the year. This year's kindergarten teacher is young, still a little Stepfordish like last year, only this one is the newer model. Still, I like her. In contrast to last year where we were met with the idea that he just wasn't making it, socially or academically - this year HE IS THE SMARTEST KID IN THE CLASS!!!!!! She said that he is the nicest child in kindergarten, and all the kids loves him. He plays with EVERYONE, and is accepted by all the kids. He his kind, and helpful when appropriate (as opposed to the kids who keep putting other children's pencils away while they are still trying to use them.) In short, Donnie is having a very good year.
After a difficult 2006/2007 school year I am just happy and thankful. Not smug like so many of the moms who gave Donnie and I sad looks last year when I went on his field trip to the Botanical Gardens.
Today life is good.
